Life Safety Equipment Information and Directions

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are emergency medical devices for use when a person is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, that deliver an electrical shock designed to return the heart to its normal rhythm.听绿奴天花板 has AEDs located throughout campus to help increase the chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).听Each year, sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of at least 250,000 people. The only known treatment for sudden cardiac arrest is the use of a defibrillator.

Once turned on, prompts are vocalized that guide an AED user through the process. One of the initial prompts instructs the user to connect the AED to the victim by placing adhesive pads on the victim's chest. The AED analyzes the victim's heart rate to determine if a shock is needed. If the AED unit does not detect an abnormal heart rhythm, it will not deliver the shock. If a shock is needed, the AED will prompt the user to press a button that will deliver the shock.听

Co-located with most AEDs are Stop the Bleed kits and Narcan. A complete list of life safety equipment and their location is below.

  • Stop the Bleed kits contain special equipment designed to handle injuries caused by immediate life-threatening bleeding.听
  • Naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray is a medicine that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. A training video providing information on the policy and use is located at the end of this page.

Please contact听emergencyoperations@ut.edu with any questions, or to report any issues with the life safety equipment.听

If Someone Requires Medical Attention

  • Remain calm.
  • Call 911 and notify Campus Safety.
  • Do not move the person unless safety dictates.
  • If trained, use pressure to stop any bleeding and provide CPR.
    • Be aware of hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens. Do not come into contact with body fluids. If exposed to suspected infectious material, wash the exposed area thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.
  • If the person is conscious, comfort and reassure them that medical assistance is on the way.
  • First aid is just that. Do not jeopardize your health or the health of the person. Wait for professional help if you are not able to provide proper first aid safely.

First Aid, CPR and AED Training

If you are interested in scheduling a First Aid, CPR and AED training session for your area, email cgottlick@ut.edu. All training sessions for first-time (or 30+ days past expired) American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certifications require the completion of a 1-2 hour online course followed by a 2-hour in-person session. All first-time courses require the attendance of at least three participants. For re-certifications, both individual and group, the training sessions last approximately one hour. To be eligible for re-certification, your current certification must not be more than 30 days expired, otherwise, you must retake the full course.听

Naloxone (Narcan) Policy Training

绿奴天花板 is committed to providing a safe environment for all faculty, staff and students, and recognizes the importance of being prepared to respond to known or suspected opioid overdose emergencies. During the summer of 2025, a policy was approved establishing guidelines for the storage, access, use and administration of Naloxone (commonly marketed as Narcan), an emergency opioid antagonist, stored in Automated External Defibrillator (鈥淎ED鈥) units on campus, which can be utilized in the event of a known or suspected opioid overdose emergency. It also outlines reporting responsibilities once a Naloxone (Narcan) kit has been administered. To learn more about the policy and administering Naloxone, please see the training video below.
